Staggered rims or not

Staggered, we drive a 4 door shagin' wagon, not a 2 door track ready coupe or roadster. The rear wheels are meant to be wider (more fender room), running a square setup without a staggered spacer setup will look yick!

definitely staggered! 
I gave back a friend's 20's with tires that he would give me for 800 cuz they weren't staggered and kept my OEM 124s for the sake of my 10" thick rear wheels
even spacers couldn't change my mind, and those rims looked pretty sweet on my car...

Not accurate. BMW and most other performance car companies stagger to reduce oversteer. This way they can tune the car with less push and more transfer to the rear. BMW is probably the best because the near 50:50 weight distribution allows for more relative weight transfer and thus allows you to get the rear around easier. The large patch is an attempt to keep more grip and less oversteer.

If your keeping your 17's then go stagger. Make sure you dont go crazy on rear size then the MPG goes away. My 2 cents go 18's stagger the tires prices are more reasonable well except for the 255/40 size.
