Just installed Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D on my stock 17 inch (Style 138) wheels on my xi. Tires seem to handle better than the stock Conti's. Planning on purchasing a set of summer wheels and tires once the weather gets warm. The snow in IL hasn't been too bad yet, but when we had 4 to 5 inches, I was able to safely travel the snow covered roads. Purchased the tires from tirerack.com and had them shipped to my local BMW dealer for install and balance.

I think you'll be happy with the Dunlop 3D or M3 style tires. I don't think they're too much different in terms of performance...

Have Dunlop M3s on 17" 138 wheels and very pleased with that combo.
