Great news, my car is in NJ at the VPC. I'm expecting delivery next week. The not so great news is, it's snowing up here.

MY SA quoted me $1950 for BMW snow tires and wheels. Is this a good deal and are these tires any good? I've seen some of you have purchased at Tire Rack. What do you recommend?

Thanks. It was kind of depressing to have my SA ask if I wanted to put snows on for delivery of the car. I told him no, that I wanted to at least drive on real tires for a couple of weeks.. Hope the snow holds off.

Just call Tire Rack. Ask for "Walt" -- he'll take care of you for a lot less than $1950...

I got my BBS RK's with Michelin Pilot Alpins frome the Tire Rack for only a few hundred bucks more than the dealer quoted me for their "package". Oh, and there's was 17". My set is 18".

I'll check out Tire Rack. They list quite a few options. Which tires do you recommend?

I went with the Dunlops (non run-flat) but there was another post that said they ran out of them.

Best bet is to call them and let them discuss the options. You need to decide what trade-offs you're willing to accept based on your winter climate and your individual needs. Some tires will offer better snow/ice grip at the sacrifice of dry handling, some will be the other way around.

Let the experts at the Tire Rack guide you into the right purchase for you...

If you're getting a wheel/tire combo, get them from tirerack. I've purchased a few sets from them over 20 years and they are the best. Call them for advice first.

The only way I'd go with the dealer is if tirerack was backordered on the tire I wanted - something I hear is a possibility. You can ship them right to the dealer if you want - mounting, balancing and shipping is included - you just bolt them on.

If the weather where you live is bad enough that you need winters, I would go with the 17" rather than the 18". Tire rack has a good explanation of the reason for this. I just bought mine (I am the one who posted that tire rack is out of the Dunlop M3) and I got the Michlin Pilot Alpin PA2 and the ASA JH3 wheels to get close to an OEM look. I have had the Piollot Alpin before and they are excellent tires for the NE. If you ask Tirerack will throw in BMW logos for the wheels for free.

I'm also rolling on 17 inch winterwheels with tires at the moment. Comfort wise it is interesting to change from 18 inch runflats to 17 inch wintertires runflats.. My car feels faster and steers lighter, plus it is much more comfortable on bad roadsurface and the tirenoise has gone down with at least 65%..

I say go for 17 inch wheels. I got the original 17 inch 545 wheels (wich you get on european cars) and it looks very distinguished too..
