Anyone know the status of the Sirus Radio receivers. I have spoken to a few dealers and all they are sayings its backorderd from Germany or on hold... One dealer even told me they are re-desgining the part.

Yeah, I've been trying to get Sirius installed for the better part of three months. According to my dealer, it's been backordered the entire time, with no news and no expected delivery date.

Welcome to our little corner of the web jersey-kid! They are both right. You can only get the Sirius service in the U.S. but the part comes from Germany. It is not made at the plant in South Carolina.

I have an update on my Sirius install. Before I could go to my appointment to have Sirius installed my dealership notified me that they are on national backorder. But it doesn?t stop there. I called around to a few dealerships (even Vista in Florida, the largest BMW dealership in the world) and the answer was always the same. NATIONAL BACKORDER. My last call was to Bell BMW in NJ. The parts manager there asked me exactly which part number I was looking for. Because I have already paid for the kit at my local dealership I had the invoice and list of part numbers for the kit:

Sirius Radio: 65126944987 $350.00
Bracket: 65106925468 $9.40
Hex Bolt: 07119902932 $0.35 (X 7)
Clip Nut: 61131372033 $1.00 (X 3)
Total: $364.85 (parts only)

He told me that the part number for the radio has changed. It is now: 65126948064. He said that he could have one shipped to me next week!! The national backorder is on the old part number, not the new one. So I tell him I will call my dealership and have them purchase the part from Bell. No problem.

I wish that were the end of the story. I then called my service advisor and let him know what is going on. He said that the most current service bulletin from BMW states that all vehicles produced (or purchased, he was unsure about this fact and he did not have the bulletin in front of him) after March 2005 would require the new part number and all built before that time would require the old part number. Here is the kicker. My SA told me that the only difference between the two units is the price. The new part number is $450.00 but it now includes a free year of Sirius!!!! We both agreed that that was very shady of BMW because in his past experience of installing Sirius (which he had done many times) and in my experience on these boards, BMW has always included a free year!!!!! He said that every radio he ever installed included a free year. Basically this all boils down to the fact that BMW is not including a free year of service in Sirius installations anymore for vehicles produced/purchased after March 2005, they are just including that in the price now!!! I cant say I?m surprised.

The last time I talked to my SA he told me that I should still get the cheaper radio in a few weeks and hopefully a free year of service. Nobody knows how long the backorder in going to last. I am not going to purchase the radio from Bell BMW for $450.00. I?ll just give it a few weeks and see how this mess works out.

I do not know if the new part number will work in pre March 2005 cars or if the old one will work in post March 2005 cars. My SA said that BMW ?usually? does not allow dealerships to install parts intended for one group of vehicles to be installed on a different group of vehicles.

Please do not take any of this for fact. This is just what I have collected from several people that don?t seem to know much more about this situation than those of you here. If anyone knows where to obtain official service bulletins, that may be of more help.

Sorry for the long post. I have nobody else to vent to that actually cares.

FYI

On the offical US BMW webpage Sirius is a $595.00 option.
Here are some prices of Sirius for other makes.

Chrysler 300: $195.00
Infinity M35: $350.00
Audi A6: $533.01
Mercedes CLS $699.00
VW: $375.00
Porsche: $990.00
Volvo: $545.00+65.00 for prep.

That is all I could find on the web. I guess BMW is not the most expensive but they are sure up there. I could not find any info on Ford, but I assume they will not be charging over 500 for the kit.
