My Ride: 2008 550i, Carbon Black Metallic with Black Dakota Leather, Sport Package, Sport Automatic Transmission, NAV, Cold-Weather Package, Folding Rear Seats, Rear Side Impact Airbags, Sirius, iPod/USB Adapter,
Model Year: 2008

Was told by a Sirius AE today that my Sirius SAT radio in my 2008 550i is not capable of receiving XM stations because the OEM radio is not compatible. I would need to purchase an adapter which would allow me to receive XM. That does not make sense, however many things with SAT radio don't make sense. Maybe I have to just wake until the two companies are fully integrated. Anyone else run into this situation?

XM transmits on different frequencies than Sirius. Why would you think it COULD receive XM?

Because with the merger, both companies are now offering "the best of" the other service. For example, Sirius now offers a "best of XM" package that includes all the Sirius channels we've been getting plus some of the channels XM had that were exclusive (like MLB, Oprah, etc.). In many (but not all) cases, this offering can be added to your existing subscription right now with no need for any equipment upgrades.

A similar thing is being offered by XM except it's called "the best of Sirius" and includes all the XM channels plus Howard Stern, Martha Stewart, etc. Again, they claim a new radio is not required...

When or where did he say this? I'm pretty sure that they've always taken the position that to take full advantage of the merged services, new radios would be required. Keep in mind that older radios are supposed to still work and could get some additional channels added so maybe Mel was referring to that?

That's not the same thing as "receiving XM". Sirius is making XM content avail. on Sirius streams. Big difference.

Right. Clearly the two systems are different (as you said) but I'm guessing the OP meant receiving the new "best of XM" offerings as I described...

No, but it is the same as "receiving XM stations", which is what the OP asked and is in fact possible. It may be a re-broadcast on Sirius frequencies, but it is receiving XM stations. Well, some of them anyway.

Because Sirius doesn't get Opie & Anthony, and their comedy channels suck.
