I'm thinking about replacing my stock shifter with an EVO 3 shifter, but can't figure out if it's something I can do on my own. Does anyone have the TIS for replacing the shifter? Does the transmission need to be dropped?

I don't believe the tranny needs to be dropped. As I understand it, it a bit of a trick, especially with the circlips. One thing to consider is to wait for them to come out with the DSSR for the EVO 3 shifter. I was told it would be a couple of months.

Another shifter to consider is the Rogue Octane Shifter. You can find the info at Beastpower.com. From what I understand, it is a good shifter, comes with their version of the DSSR and is a lot cheaper. I suggest you go to M5Board.com and do a search on short shifters, you will find a bunch.

good luck

I'm actually looking to replace the entire shift mechanism, not just the knob. Will need to disconnect the linkage from the tranny. Not sure how big of a deal that is - specifically do I need to drop the tranny.

Oh, I see what you're talking about now...

I think this is what you're looking for:

The good news is you don't have to drop the tranny...the bad news is you have to lower part of the exhaust system...

Thanks. How about removal of the shifter carrier - that's the horizontal piece into which the shifter lever fits.

Will do. I'm going to do both the clutch delay valve removal (bought the replacement part from Bavarian Autosport for $29) and the Rogue shifter install with a BMW mechanic in a week or so (on a Saturday or Sunday). Will take pics. Apparently the Rogue Octane Shifter uses the stock carrier, so don't need to remove/replace it. Will need to remove the tranny bracket so the tranny drops down a few inches in order to remove & replace the shifter linkage. Need to yank the exhaust first. Rudy posted the TIS on this (thanks Rudy!!).

While I have the pig apart, I'm thinking I may as well drop the Dinan flywheel in. Another $2,000 though. Will need to think it over. Gotta put 5 kids thru college.

I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to...is there something in the .pdf I posted that shows this part?
