I bought the Equus Innova OBD-II code scanner from Sears for $69.99. Worked like a charm... I was able to read the error code along with clearing the Service Engine Soon light on the dash AND the Increased Emission warning in the iDrive.

I recently bought a 2004 525i and I'm in the process of checking the car out thoroughly, including running diagnostics for the "check engine" light. Which Equus model did you buy? I'd hate to take the car to the dealer for something I might be able to handle myself.
factory codes. I recently had a bunch of errors pop up that were hidden from ODBII but visible using Peake.
