Default Scan tool for e60 - Recommendations?

Hi,

Newbie here - seeking your experience please.

I've recently got an e60 530i 2004. I intend to do all the maintenance and keep cars for a long time. I've got a service manual and in reading that, it's clear I'll need a BMW scan tool... So... What are you guys using when you (for example) change out electronic components, the battery, etc - Something pretty comprehensive please, as I don't just want a bnox that shows some indecipherable hex number in response to a fault.

Thanks
Pauly2

depends on if you want a generic [OBD-II] tool that you can use on other cars as well OR you want a dedicated tool just for BMW/mini.

Search for "Equus 3160 Innova ABS + Professional CanOBD2 Diagnostic Code Scanner with Enhanced Live Data"
or Bavarian Tech tool http://www.bavariantechnic.com/?gcli...FYPc4AodaWPltA

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - I'd be happy with a dedicated BMW tool.

Thanks again for the advice.

How about an OBDII for other cars as well? What do you guys go for? I also have a Jetta and will like to just buy one OBDII for both.

Two different setups. One is BMW and the other VAG. I got my VAG setup from same place. I think I bought it on their site though. That was like 2 yrs ago so i don't remember. If you're looking for a generic reader any cheap OBD reader will work then. If you're looking for specific dealer level equipment to actually do programming and diagnostics then you have to get those type of tools.

Well I initially got this one because I have an 04 BMW Progman V41 USB OBD Package Dis SSS Ncsexpert Inpa Ediabas | eBay
but if you have 2008 then this BMW USB OBD Progman V41 Package Dis SSS Ncsexpert Inpa Ediabas | eBay

I upgraded with the Universal package and then the ISTA because I have 3 bimmers and I have another 4 in the family plus I do work on the side for various shops when needed. And boy did it all come in handy this week. Talk about a return. I learned a lot too. What a trade-off.
