actually i kind of agree about the touch screen vs. idrive. i have a tomtom 920 which has a remote. who will ever thought it will be of any use when you get the touch screen...
however i play around with it and the remote seems pretty useful. i originally thought i would toss this in the garbage but i think i will leave it in the car since having a remote (it's a bluetooth remote so don't need line of sight, what a cool thing) as input is pretty useful.

Yep, and for the benefit of others it has another feature that the BMW currently lacks which is address input via voice recognition including street names. Another pretty good feature on the higher end tomtom and garmin units is that they will also read street names when giving directions (and it works well but it can struggle a little when trying to pronounce some of the street names out here which are derived from Spanish)

The LCI cars do have voice input for navigation addresses using speech-to-text -- I'm not sure if it's a function of the software version only (meaning pre-LCI cars could get it with a progman upgrade...)

Are you sure about the voice recognition for address input? I'm not in the car right now but I seem to recall entering addresses using STT.

Maybe, or maybe it just didn't have new enough software...

My car was at the dealer so often I think I got most Progman updates on the day of release... As of June 07 I had current software, and no voice input for street names.
