scoops work best with the stock box
as far as drop in filters, RPI reccommends a BMC fitler, but most go with K&N or just stock filter. IIRC, gains with stock versus aftermarket air filter was minimal, but BMC quality I've read to be reported to be slightly better.
just make sure you don't drop the stock box for a cone/open air intake system..

the upper right search bar is a useful tool for those that like to research before buying

As Gene said, the RPi scoops work best with the stock airbox w/ a K&N or BMC filter. If you can, I'd recommend you return the aFe filter and purchase the RPi Induction Kit which comes with a filter & scoops. http://acuteperformance.com/ram-air-...5-series-p-165
If you can't return the aFe filter, I do sell the RPi scoops.

cool, and thanks for the reply's. and would only one scoop look weird? would there be a way (even though it would be pointless except for looks) to mount one on the other side?

+1 for just the one, a "dummy" scoop is just that IMO, dumb...
but since you have a 545i, a dinan intake system would work with 2 scoops..
or you can DIY a dinan style intake set-up:
