During last days, talking in the =3 board about the stupid fuel range of the M5, I was if it's doable to swap the tank with the E65/66/67 one .

Just for curiosity, I went to see on bmwfans.info the tank of the E60 and of the 7 series .

And this is the result :

545i tank :

http://bmwfans.info/original/E60/Lim/545i-...16/ill-16_0549/

745i tank :

http://bmwfans.info/original/E66/Lim/745Li...16/ill-16_0517/

The shape is similar . The dimension should be similar because the 7er is only a little bigger than the 5 .

The tank is not so expensive (? 300) and would allow you to have 88 litres (22 gallons US) instead of 70 (17.5) ; and to travel for 850 km (600 miles) with the 545i, for 1300 km with the 535d and 650-700 km with the M5 .

Which is your opinion ?

It's only a thought, but a quite curious thought in my opinion .

It's not gonna fit Alex. Size, straps and spacers are all different.

Size should be similar Andy : the 7er is 20 cm longer and a little larger .

The problem if the juncture is the same or it is different .

It appears difficult, ok . But if I have time and money to waste .. I would try

I agree, even in my more economical 530xi the cruising range is limited by a smallish fuel tank. So on an M5 the mad dashes between fill-ups must get tiring. BMW didn't figure out where to hide a few more gallons of fuel this time. Maybe in the next iteration.

I'm sure if there is space there you can find someone to cut and expand your current fuel tank. It will be cheaper and you wont have too many fitment issues.

How about a secondary tank behind rear passenger seat just like hybrid battery behind LS460 hybrid?

But less safe than a new tank .
About the cutting .. I heard it is made of plastic : it is possible to cut the plastic and welt a new piece ?
Everyone would be happy with a big petrol engine with 88 litres!

88*15 are 1320 km . Which is the consumption of a remapped 535d at 130-140 kmh ?
I think 14 kml or more .
