Hey guys. What are your opinions on replica wheels? I am thinking of picking up a set of rims devoted to winter tires for next winter. My '08 will have the 246 18inch rims with summer tires, and I was thinking of getting a 17inch rim for the winter tires. I came across a site which sells style 184 but in 17inch for around $575 shipped. I called and spoke with a company rep and he said it will fit my E60. I'm usually pretty suspicious so I thought I'd check with all of you guys to see if you had any thoughts. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17-Bmw-5-6-...58267QQtcZphoto

Thanks for any insight.

All depends on the quality / manufacturer. I bought a pair of replicas for use as my winter wheels and have no problems at all. But, I bought them from Tire Rack, from a well knnown manufacturer - ASA. I probably could have found cheaper wheels, but I didnot want to risk problems.

Thanks. Did you have any problems with the TPM system--any special equipment needed?

No problems, but i have the "old' system without sensors in the wheels. All I need to do is "reset" when Ichnage the wheels.

Those wheels are going to look TINY. 17'...

You will deal with vibration issues probably. Everyone I know with any type of replicas have been running into the same issue.

I'm not as worried about whether they look small (I have 17s on my e39 right now, and these are for only 2 or 3 months in the winter, and I would like the smaller wheel with a 45 or 50 sidewall on a narrower tire in the winter), but the vibration issue concerns me. Does any part of the vibration have to do with the mount and balance, or is it the wheel itself? Have you ever heard of the place in my original link? BTW, those rims look fantastic on your car.

He's a cool honest guy and I like him. Search his website for other wheels.

Most of the replicas run into vibration issues overtime. Most of them have been able to relieve the problem by replacing the hubcentric rings. After a few months, I see their rims up in the Classified Section.... so I'm guessing the vibration issue came back. It's really a hit or miss. Some people have had replicas for years with no problems, but others aren't so lucky. You get what you pay for.

I have been using a set of replica 17" style 124 (check my gallery) devoted for the last 2 winter seasons - no problems ! However I am in the process of getting 19" summer set and might convert the current 18" summer into a winter RFT setup.

The 17" will probably go next season...purely on logistical and cosmetic reasons - they have served me very well, even at high speed.
