do you have any idea how many people out there watch you drive by and think "man i cant wait til i get one!"

just buy a battery from autozone and drop it or do what i did and complain so much that the dealer gives you a new one
why am i a freak?

i dont want to sell the car because i dont like bmw anymore. i want to sell the car because its a sedan thats pretty slow.

I am a doubting Thomas on the need to have "registering" or "reprogramming". If the logic is so the alternator will not overcharge the new battery - it does not make sense.

The alternator has electronics to adjust to a weakening old battery - automatically so why wouldn't those same electronics provide for the alternator to adjust to the stronger new battery - automatically?

Bret you still rock!

i need a new battery and i called to get price quotes. 850 amp battery installed was $480. Install time they said was just over an hour. They said it had to be programmed, and that 2006 was the first year batteries needed programing. I have done some searching on the forum and have read that the whole programming issue was B.S. Anyone ever pay the dealer to do it?...if yes how does this price look?

Should i just buy a battery and do this myself? I have a friend who is a certified mechanic and could help me with something this small. Suggestions?

Just has my 2004 545i replaced at BMW dealership for $360, parts and labor. They tuned some other things while there, I think they had to recalibrate steering wheel. Battery was low and caused lots of electronic malfunctions to occur, which were due to low voltage/amps. I couldn't shift out if 3rd gear, abs indicated faulty and I could put transmission in gear w/o stepping on brake, so not sure if mere replacement of battery fixed all that or if they had to tweak computer afterwards......

It was pricey, but I feel good knowing it was done right and things were properly checked out. I can't imagine the need for a smart battery i.e. needing programmed in 2006 models, but other systems on the car might need programmed after the battery power is removed during replacement.

because a bmw 530i with the I6 engine is NOT a slow car, its very well balanced and has DS mode for a sportier feel

my father has a 07 911 targe 4s and that is a fast car, way faster than anyone would ever need but when i switch from that to my bmw i never think "God this is so slow"

Yes Brett, I would think that John's car might be able to quench your thirst for more speed. 550 is a lot faster than 530. A lot. And it has a beautiful engine sound.
