You haven't told us what brand the tires were, and I'll be willing to bet that's a good bit of the problem....

What do you mean by "China may not be made to specs. "

They eihter have runout, eliptical, out of balance or have nothing wrong. Do the test and satisfy your curiosity (and mine). It may only be one wheel and/or tire

And by the way forget about the "Hunter machine". A good shop with a dynamic wheel balancing machine is as good or better.

Race cars including Nascar (Goodyear etc.)only use dynamic wheel balancers.

PS (edit): Forget about the hub rings and spacers and put one wheel on at a time and drive the car. That way you will see which wheel or tire is the problem.

sorry to hear your bad experience... but there are a ton of people happy with replicas out there... just browse through all the car forums... like e46fanatics... in fact, i got my wife CSL replicas in 18", staggered and they have been great.. wheels cames mounted and balanced with kumho's and all i had to do was put them on.

having said that, quality control on these reps are probably not as good so the chances of getting a lemon is greater, but they appear to be the exception by far.

cheers,

MMAfia

MMafia,

Where did you get your wheels and tires.

Also did any one get their wheels and tires from 1010.

I got them from https://jlevistreetwerks.com/store - they are site sponsors over at e46fanatics.com... excellent service, good follow through, great product... they are the velocity motoring variants with the fluted spokes... pretty much identical to the oems unlike the umitzas which have flat spokes.

put them on the wifey's z4... rides so much better than the runflats her car came with. looks awesome.

I am not saying that all replicas are bad. I am saying that my replicas are bad.

My tires are General Exclaims. On Tire Rack, they are rated the #1 tire in their category, and there are about 1000 people who have raved about them which earned them the highest scores. The people on Tire Rack are everyday people who want quiet quality tires. If they caused problems, they would get low ratings and complaints (like most of the other tires). It is easy to trash the tires, but there are also hundreds of people on this site with less expensive tires (expecially when they replace the run flats) who do not complain about vibration either.

I bought my replicas from Lake Shore Wheel and Tire. They have advertisements on e-bay. I keep wondering why the price of my replicas dropped from $850 to around $600 within the last few months.

If there are those who have good #166 replicas, I would like to know where they got them.

As for the Hunter 9700 machine, I consider it the minimum standard for balancing.

One point worth noting is that my 275/30/19 (rear) setup was placed on 9" wheels rather than 9.5" wheels. The fronts were 8" rather than 8.5" with the standard front setup.
I cannot imagine that such a fact would make a difference.

Best regards,

I have tried everything to eliminate the problems (vibration and brake problems) with my 19" staggerred #166 replica wheels for my 530i: Hubcentric rings (plastic and metal), balancing on a Hunter Machine, etc.
I have significantly reduced the vibration noise, but it is still there. In addition, there is a braking squeal at very slow speeds (1 mph) which is a little different than the groaning.
I am convinced that the wheels are probably defective. I actually do not think that the hubcentric fit is the sole problem. The OEM wheels fit flush with the hub, whereas the replicas seems to bolt on strangely.

Once I put the OEM 17" wheels back on the car, I went back to a smooth drive, and the braking squeal went away. I could not remove the 20mm spacers in the back as some corrosion had locked them in place. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove H&R spacers that are stuck? I tried a putty knife to pry them off, but the knife could not wedge its way in.

I am back to the drawing board. I will probably buy some OEM #166s. I love the style. Maybe I will go from 275s to 285s.

I paid $1600 for the whole set up with tires. I have spent another $400 on sensors and balancing. I have spent hours really getting to know these tires and the hub area of the car.

What do you all think that I should do about the place that sold me the wheels? These are clearly defective and not fit for their intended purpose. Since I bought the wheels, the wheel place (Lake Shore Wheels) has reduced the price on the replicas by $200 for the set of 19" staggerred (I think that they know that there is a problem). Any ideas? Do you think that I am out of luck (buyer beware), or I have a legitimate beef to request a refund (or a partial one)?

This is a sad day for me. I can't believe that I have spent 2 months losing the nice enjoyment of my car for these types of issues. I love to fix things, so it was good getting to know how to remove my wheels and replace them in less than 1 hour.

Please be careful with replica wheels!!!! If anyone sees a set of used M5 wheels floating around, send them to me.
Best,
Dear Monaco, I am sorry for you and hope you get a nice deal, the best is try Quad_m he will help you if he sees your misery :'(

This is why I hate replicas and never!!! understand anybody here to buy them for a nice classy and expensive car!!!

Hope you will be back to normal and your sad story will be a lesson for all, this is why some of us "fight" against any replicas here and off forums too.

FAKE just does NOT suit our nice, classy BMWs

Some people only see the money side, but in the long run I have never seen or heared anybody gaining on fake or replica stuff, the brand comes normally with a higher quality and warranty.

Please keep us posted when you and your beaty is happy with some nice OEM BBS 166 style BMW M5 rimz

As mine are from a different part of the world, it probably won't help you.

Mine are stamped "made in Germany" with TUV type approval and came from wheelmania in the UK

www.wheelmania.co.uk
Have had them on since March now and done a fair few thousand miles on them and never had the slightest problem. No shimmy, no vibration, nothing at all. Tyres on mine are Uniroyal Rainsport (Continental), which I had before in 19" on my former E39 and found them absolutely ace. Possibly wearing a little faster, but top grip and handling in all conditions.
