I am not a big gadget guy and I do not have the USB port in my 535. All I want is an inexpensive IPod with decent memory.
What amount of memory do I need? Cheapest place to get one?
TIA

Ipod shuffles are nice and cheap for the shorter trips/occasions. They run about $50 for 1 GB...GL
BUt to clarify, you don't have an ipod/USB port in the car, but still want an IPOD?

Decent memory for workouts or short car drives? Or something that is going to store your entire workout collection?

I want this exclusively for the car and short trips. I do not have the USB port, but I do have an AUX plug. I can get a cord to go from the AUX to the IPod right?

Like geneatals said - get something small in memory and most definitely with flash-based memory. I have 80Gb iPod and playlists load VERY VERY slowly! I recently tried my wife's Nano and it worked much better.
As far as the purchase - try Apple Store and look into refurbished products. You get a perfect quality Nano plus free $15 iTunes card...if it matters to you.
