Long time lurker, but first post. Need answer for M5 offset 12/28.
After searching numerous times and reading everything I could on the style #166 wheel with the M5 and M6 offsets, I thought I would be safe to go with the M6 offsets, 12/17 front and rear. (My vechicle: 2008 535i with the sport package/suspension). Tires are Mechelin: front: 245/35R19, rear: 275/30R19. The rear tires are rubbing on the outside. Started grinding the inside lip of fender but stopped because in my opinion this was not the way to go. My question to the membership: Without any "doubt" will the M5 offset for the rear style #166 wheel "NOT RUB" inside or outside of tire. I do not want to roll the fenders. Wheels that came on car was style #124 18in., offsets 20/32. It looks like I will be buying M5 offsets for the rear if they don't rub and try to sale the rear M6 offset wheels. I "THINK" I will be OK with the M5 offset rear but wanted some reassurance from you guys. Thanks for your time.

+1 I agree. Several folks are running 166 with M6 offsets, no rubbing issue, at least none that I've heard.

I also have a 2008 535i with Sports package/suspension. I installed OEM 166 M5 offsets with no rubbing issues. I then installed 12mm H&R spacers on the rears and no rubbing. I found it strange how your OEM 166 M6 offsets rubbed as I never heard issues with either M6 offset or M5 offset + 12mm spacers. BTW, did you lower you car..... I'm thinking that something must be different about your car....
Anyways in response to your question..... definitely I can see there is alot of room (no chance of rubbing) with M5 offset.

Thanks guys for the responses.

Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus XL

GENEaTALS: I live on the right coast, if we were closer you would have a deal. Thanks for the offer.

Stock sport suspension, tires will only rub (both sides) when there is a slight dip in the road and no passengers in the rear seat.

There was one member (can't remember his name) who posted pictures with the same setup that I have that his right rear tire rub. From the pictures you could see that the inner lip was not "rolled back" and was causing his rub.

It made me sick when I heard the rub. I guess I'll put the stock #124's back on and wait a couple months (3-4) and buy M5 #166 for the rears. The wife said if I spent any more money at the present time she would circumsize me with a chain saw. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH

wonder if it's just the tires? I've heard of some tire brands being a bit taller than others...

most members have general's or falkens without issues....

if not, put a feeler out there for trade perhaps..I am sure there are members out there with m5 offsets that wants M6 offsets...

It's your tires. I'm too lazy to check but compare the section width of this tire to the Michelin PS2. I'm guessing it's larger which is why you have the rub.

OBD:

I believe you are on to something. I went to tirerack.com and pulled up the info for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position

Michelin:
Tread width: front: 8.7"
rear: 10.3"

Bridgestone:
Tread width: front: 8.4"
rear: 9.6"

.7" (tenth) of and inch difference. That may be enough for me to clear. The tread width of the tire never came in my consideration. I thought a 275/30R19 in one tire would be the same in another tire. I'm such a dumbass. I hope my mistake will be a benefit for someone else. OBD, thanks for your time.
