So I've searched thru all the threads here and bimmerfest for a Quad exhaust setup for my 2006 550i.

I went to Eurorev in LA, who did the mtech body kit for my car. Great guys, vincent is great, but it doesn't seem that many people have done the 550 with quad exhausts.

We narrowed it down to Remus for the best price and low rumble sound I'm going for, but the problem is that Remus doesn't make a quad setup for the 550

So we thought we might be able to get 2 universals and do custom piping, but it doesn't look like the passenger side is going to be big enough for the 2 universal square mufflers. Vincent was going to take my mtech diffuser and apparently he can with some fiberglass work make it a dual even with that cool lip to match perfectly.

Back to the muffler decision,
Option 1 should I go with 1 universal muffler on the driver side
http://www.remusexhaustshop.com/twin-362x3...ev3-p-1125.html
then get one of the single small round cans for the passenger http://www.remusexhaustshop.com/single-rou...val-p-1128.html
and get dual tips put on that one. He would do custom y pipe out underneath the car. I'm not even sure the single round oval can from remus will even fit to be honest on the passenger side.

Option 2 would be get the remus 550 exhaust http://www.remusexhaustshop.com/series-550...578-p-1285.html
and from the back of that can, run a pipe to the passenger side. which would be kindof a custom job like the hamann (although I'm not sure if this is a good idea, modifing the remus muffler) http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...mp;#entry469053

option 3 same as 2 but run a y pipe at the point right before the muffler to the passenger side.

Option 4, use the remus quad they sell for the 530, and modify I guess the attachment point to fit the 550
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...30&start=30
Although I contacted Remus and they said the DO NOT make a quad for the 550 as they haven't been able to get it right.

option 5, is go to a muffler shop and do this magnaflow mod
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=27840&st=90
Don Juan's post
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?act=attach...st&id=37193
he added 2 additional silencers
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?act=attach...st&id=37192

option 6, get expensive with the eisenman

I want the look of the quad, but more importantly having a v8 I just want some rumble, low muscle car growl. I don't want it to be annoying with any droning at cruising speed or give passengers a headache. But when I drive in a garage, take off at a light, start it up, I want it to sound like a v8

I'm at a loss here folks, please please help! I'll call AAA muffler tomorrow in LA to see if they have suggestions. I really like vincent at eurorev and want them to do the work as they did a good job on the mtech body kit. He quoted me $1,300 with the redo of the diffuser for a remus system, but that was when we thought they made a quad system.

Why oh why won't remus make one? I'd like to stay in that budget range, under $1500 with the diffuser. Boy I love the hamann diffuser but that alone was like $900.. ouch!

Looks like you did all the research already, you just need to pick your poison. The Remus is great, but it would have to modified, I'm sure its not that difficult. The best bang for the buck, would be a custom quad setup. There has been many on the forum that went custom Borla, Magnaflow and others. Check out "az530on21's" custom Magnaflow quad setup. He has the Hamann quad diffuser, it looks and sounds great. Since you have a 550i it will sound even better.

Forum member "az530on21's" quad setup, its a custom magnaflow quad setup with x-pipe.

Hey Newbiebimmer,
I'm in the same spot as you...except I think I'm just gonna stick to the Mtech rear mod and forget the quad exhaust mod...But my limited research turned up local muffler shop vs. Eisenmann/Eisenhaus quad set up which btw isn't a true dual exhaust. $2110.00 !! and 6-8 weeks to get!!!....good luck with it, I'll be jealous when I see yours .

If the inlet size on 6 cylinders models is the same as the V8 models, our quad exhaust could work with modifications.

OK, here's what I've found out so far:

The Remus Dual (quad) for the 525/530...........It can probably be used, however, I would want to have a confirmation on what size the inlet pipe's diameter is. Please see my post >>>>>HERE<<<<<

Remus Universals..........The space between the spare tire bin and the battery bin on the right side is approximately 5". This means the only Remus universal mufflers that have any chance of fitting there are the oval can version which measure 7.48"x4.72"x14.96". The diameter of the round body universals, as well as the smallest dimension on the "square can" Remus are both above 5".

Other Universals...........Other universals that I have researched are Magnaflow and Borla. Both have some mufflers that will fit on the right side. I called and talked with reps at both companies about what I was trying to do. I told them that my main objectives were to have a deeper sound than stock, but not necessarily much louder, AND that I don't want any resonance/droning. The Magnaflow rep told me that all of their mufflers WILL have droning and there is no getting away from it. The Borla rep told me that I should try to use the biggest muffler that will fit to have the least amount of sound increase over OEM and the least chance of droning. He recommended the Borla Turbo XL Part # 40665 with 2.5" inlet and outlet diameter and the following dimensions: 19" x 4" x 9 1/2". He said that it should be about 30% louder than stock and have the least amount of droning/resonance. The 4" dimension should help it easily fit in between the spare tire bin and the battery bin, however, I have to measure the area one more time to make sure the other dimensions are OK too.

X-Pipe..........I think I would go with the Magnaflow PART #: 10791 (2.5" inlets/outlets). It lists for around $200, but you can get it for much cheaper. Of coarse, if you use the Remus quad then there is no need for an X-Pipe.

Tips.............I have not decided on tips yet, but one thing I know is that even if I get the Remus quad system I Will not buy the Remus tips. Although I really like some of the Remus tips that come on their universal mufflers, i don't like any of the ones available for the dual (quad) system (they are also smaller than I would prefer).

There are a couple of other options that I'm considering, but I have not done enough research on them to make any comments here.

wow, Rody you are awesome. I'm shocked Magnaflow fessed up and actually admitted they would have droning noise given how they describe their XL performance muffler http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopdis...main&id=303

Which of course puts me suspect on borla... I'll have to search around for some sound clips.

As for the remus, according to the remus rep
http://www.remusexhaustshop.com/e6061-530i...078-p-1218.html
this is 84m tips, which isn't the 90 I think I want, but I think is probably good enough. What do you think?

I think we are getting close here for all the 545 and 550 owners!

I'll call AAA exhaust and get a price quote on the borla with x pipe installed. You think both mufflers the same vertical position?

Yeah....the description of the Magnaflow XL says that it is designed to cancel unwanted sounds, yet the rep told me that the XL will have the MOST droning because instead of the smoke going straight out it will hit the back wall and turn around which will case more droning

Which of course puts me suspect on borla... I'll have to search around for some sound clips.
I met one of the local board members who had installed custom quads using Borla mufflers on his 6 cyl. E60 and there was definitely some droning (although not as bad as my old B&B exhaust). However, he used the ProXS mufflers which are different than the turbo XL. They are also smaller than the Turbo XL, which theoretically can make them louder and add more droning.

As for the remus, according to the remus rep

I also met another local member that has the Remus on his 6 cyl E60 and his Remus definitely had less droning than the Borla ProXS, but it did have some. The tips looked good, however, I like the 3.5" double wall tips. Since Remus does not sell any of their tips that I like, I will be getting other tips if I end up getting the Remus duals.

I don't know......I guess I would either have both mounted in the vertical position or I may just have the left one mounted horizonally and have a plate that is the same shape as the left muffler welded behind the right tips to make both sides look horizontal.

The Eisenmann Race exhaust was the very first exhaust system that I listened to on a 545. It was a long time ago, but if I remember correctly the interior noise level was good, but at the time being an exhaust novice I did not even know about resonance and droning and wasn't listening for it. What turned me off about the Eisenmann was that it had a "raspy" or "tinny" sound that I personally don't like. However, I did not notice it until I heard the B&B a few days later and realized how much deeper it sounded compared to the Eisenmann and how there was no raspy tinny noise.

Around the same time I also listened to a 545 with the B&B muffler and I just loved the deep sound. That's what convinced me to buy the B&B for my car. I loved the way it sounded outside the car, but the resonance and droning drove me nuts and I got rid of it in just a few weeks.

Here are some of my posts from back in 2005 when I met a couple of members with the Eisenmann Race and B&B exhausts and video taped both. There is also a post with the B&B on my car before I removed it:
