I aws curious what is involved as far as adding a quad exhaust system to my '08 550. I was going to simply add an RPI and be done with it but really love the M5 look. Obviously, I know the bumper would have to be changed but wanted to know if it is plug and play as far as fit? Also, is the exhaust direct fit or is there alot of modification and other parts needed to install it? I know RPI makes an M5 exaust but I doubt it bolts directly on to a 550. Any help or direction would be great, Thanks. By the way, just did my first mod(matte black kidney grills) and am waiting to receive my red RPI scoop...I see this car is going to start a whole new addiction!

The genuine M5 doesn't have the battery box on the right side. The battery is located in the spare wheel compartment, which is different as well compared to a non-M5 car. So, there is much more space under the car for the right side muffler. You can barely fit a motorcycle muffler on the right side in a non-M5 car.

Here's a pic of a custom exhaust made to a non-M5. I'm not sure if those mufflers are for a motorcycle or not, but they are really small anyway...

Your right, it is a tight fit. I just didn't want to get into a ton of fabrication to make everything fit(more money). Actually looks pretty good though.

Yes that looks good.

Here's a pic of the underside of the M5:

This is what I did:

Is there a muffler on the right side or just pipes?

No muffler, just the pipe coming from the muffler on the left.

Here's more of my exhaust project:

do more search on this forum...I have a 2008 550i and I put a quad exhaust from R&D...Looks and sounds great. This is a true setup just like the M5.
Of course it is a little bit expensive (budget around $3k with labor)

The bumper did not have to be changed nor removed(just added a new diffuser)

Do you have any pictures of yor setup? Are the rear bumpers on our cars actually 2 pieces? I've seen pics of member's cars who added different diffuser's but I thought it just went directly over top of the existing one. Just did a search on removal of the diffuser, did not even realize it comes off. Thanks.

You can always replace the middle resonator with a muffler and have two pipes out to the bumper.

Get the Umnitza Quad if you want to save yourself a bunch of trouble and pain trying to get a setup done.

If your into this stuff then there are many threads with custom magnaflows done on the 5series where the resonator is replaced with a 2 in 2 out Magnaflow muffler.
