few questions...

1) did they leave the hood open during the dyno?
2) in the pic above, is that how far the fan was during the dyno?

Yes, they left the hood open, and the fan was on and placed as pictured. Actually, I thought it was a little close... I thought the scoops were a little outside of the bottom diameter of the fan housing?? Additionally, the dips in the dyno appeared as the DSC/DTC light was flashing on the console... doesn't that mean that the car is applying brake to individual wheels to equalize spin?

I had my car dyno'd at a place in Tukwila, WA called Pina Motorsports. The cost was $109.00. The machine was state of the art, but if you use them you need to know more about your car with respect to DTC button in, or out; or run it in Auto mode, or M1, M2, M3, or M4... They ended up running the car with the DTC button pushed in and in M4. Hell, I didn't have a clue what the best setting was. I do know that brake was automatically applied to certain wheels when the DSC/DTC light flashes... Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me. Nevertheless, attached are pictures of a 2008 535xi on the dyno, and then the best dyno run report. I was a little upset... a little lower than expected.
Looks like a 4 wheel drive Dyno Dynamics (DD). The numbers are right about what MacFly (he has the Dinan tune as well) got on RPi's DD except we dyno with the hood down and fan further away ~8ft.

As promised... Dyno before exhaust mods-dyno_rpi_oct_08.jpg

this dyno was done during a dyno day at RPI...dyno dynamics in "shootout mode". cars tht went before me was several e63, s500, M5's and M3's....

also, this is my dyno...they forgot to change out the model before the dyno!

Your dyno number would have been higher if the fan had been placed as close as justdoit's. We have done tests where the position of the fan would affect the dyno numbers. The closer the fan, the higher the numbers.

I corrected my signature... I had a wish list of a Dinan tune, but decided against it. This is stock baseline. The other observation... I took the picture during the final dyno test that registered the highest numbers... Look at the fan... Is that an optical illusion, or does it not look like they had the fan on? I know they went between having it on and off... I really don't know why. The wheels are blurred and spinning, but the fan looks still.

If you don't have the Dinan tune then the numbers are too high. It would appear that the dyno operator did some correction factors. The 271rwhp looks to be Dyno Jet (DJ) numbers. Dyno Dynamics has a feature which allows for converting DD numbers to DJ. Using 20% drivetrain loss, on a Dyno Jet, 271rwhp / 80 = 338 crank hp.

Also, the fan isn't moving.

I watched these guys set the machine... They didn't seem to be too sophisticated. The only settings they changed were the scale for HP & torque and the redline. This is a DynoDynamics machine. Based on the factory specs in the 535xi technical manual, I expected 300HP at 5800RPM, and 300lb-ft torque. They assumed that the AWD DTC caused the dips. They noted that the two small twin-turbos rocketship the torque immediatly, but then no more power can be gained at the end because the turbo's aren't big enough to keep up. Thus, after about 5600-5700RPM, it is unable to generate additional torque and HP.
