I guess it needs to be painted to really appreciate it, but Im not too into the look to be honest...

Yes the hamann design is very agrresive and not everybody likes his high class bmw to look that aggresive.
But then again a lot of others like the aggresive look so it s personal taste

I wonder if this lip will improve road holding at higher speeds - (is this not the main purpose ?) - was this tested in a wind tunnel to see how much more down force it would generate?

I am sure Hamann tested it, and as its almost a copy i think it does the job.

I would not trust things like those wich you don't know what kind of aerodinamics it can generate. The last pic shows like real plastic to me
