I want to add a K&N filter-charger intake system, and a nice exhaust system to try to pick up a few ponies.

Is it possible to do this without setting off the alarms? The reason I ask is, apparently I didn't tighten the gas cap up enough, and the alarms went off. If it's that sensitive to change, I'm worried about setting off the onboard auto-nannies.

best intake system for the e60 would be the RPI ram air scoop (we have in stock) paired with an aftermarket filter. you can also remove your charcoal filter if you have it. for exhaust, you can pair the scoop with the RPI exhaust, and there is one specifically for the 525s and 530s. both give dyno-proven power as well

Will take a look, and a listen on YouTube to see if I can hear what the set up sounds like...

This may become my car in 12 months when my lease expires. May pick up a new 3 for the wife, and I take the 5 since it's high mileage, and I work colse to home. Once it is all mine (insert diabolical laugh)...

Most reports state that RPI Scoop + BMC Air Filter is the most HP/real-life power gain.

There's a little-known mod of the throttle body, which basically involves boring out your stock throttle body. Dinan has an acceptable offering for the N52 engines - not sure which one you have though, but check dinan.com and search for other throttle mods.

Sprint booster or Velocity Throttle Booster seem to be pretty popular. And they are good, no doubt. They do not add any power - these are simply "amplifiers" for your by-wire gas pedal. They do make the car feel faster though, if only in the first gear. However, I've personally taken my SB off and I love the car without it more now.

To me, the jury is still out on the exhaust. It seems that on a 6 cylinder engine exhaust is really just for the sound - it seems to add little to no real-life power. IMHO if you want the best sound, RPI is the one. But I have not heard them all yet.

You can go really serious and start looking at turbo/supercharger kits, but you'll be looking at AT LEAST $5k, not to mention that it'll probably set off a whole lot of those alarms you're worried about.

Whatever you decide, good luck and keep us posted

It's about $185 with the RPI scoop and BMC filter. If you choose to save some $$$ get the RPI scoop ($99 I think) and a K&N filter ($56 - what I paid).
