Darn chrome is ugly. Well if black aborbs the heat then why are our intakes black? The thermo wrap is it the wrap that makes it work or is the the chrome that does the trick?
Good question, probably because it's not worth the cost for BMW to wrap the stock intake for a few degrees in temperature. Black plastic is cheaper. The chrome will reflect radiant heat and the insulation will prevent conduction of heat...I'd argue that the chrome would have a greater effect in a moving car than the insulated wrap itself.

Honestly, if you want the looks, just spray it black. It's not going to affect it THAT much. Or if you want, get the aluminum tape from home depot. It'll look more aluminumn than chrome!

well if i do spray it black, then is there any benefit of wrapping it in the first place since it will absorb radiant heat. Would it not be the same or better as leaving the intake tube alone?

There still is insulation. It's okay to wrap it. But I'd rather you leave the chrome or wrap it a second layer with aluminum tape wrap. That tape is actual aluminum.

Heat = power loss.

No heat is the way to go.
