My Ride: '04 545i - fully loaded, everything but Navi
God, am I ever so happy to have found this place and you guys....
I have a '04 545i that I purchased in 07, fully loaded with every package but Navi. Absolutely love the car on open road and good conditions. This winter in Chicago has been hell on my car. Last year, I made it through without snow tires, this year I am ready to use that MrRebate link and get a winter set...that said...
I have owned the car for about 16months now....and I am about to purchase my 8th tire for it (7th due to flats/blowouts). I have had the worst luck. Every time, I am told low profile tires don't have enough side wall to absorb harsh road conditions. Fine. Each time I swallow that pill. Well, last night while it was -15 out, I had my first blowout. Luckily, I only waited an hour for AAA. Thinking my 124 rim is hosed, I started looking for new ones. About $375 online, and not so highly liked by you guys, as I read in other threads.
My question is this, is it possible to get rid of these low profile rims and get "regular" ones? I saw on a BMW parts site that there were other "regular" rims available for my car. When I went to Discount Tire this AM, they told me I had to keep similar rims but could go down a size in rims at best...What say you true car enthusiasts?
They're looking the rim over and will let me know later today if it needs to be replaced or repaired. My saving grace is the tire insurance DiscountTire gives. Though, I have gotten 8 tires from there, I have only paid full price for 4, the other 4 costed between $30-40 each....great for tires that are around $200+.
I'm already thinking to plop down $1300 or so for a winter tire package...would rather not have to spring for whole other set, but will if it will save me any more grief...
Below, is a pic of yesterday's debacle...

check the classifieds section someone on here might have a set of oem 17s for cheap that would be good for mounting winter tires onto. As for winter tires check out tirerack.com for good pricing.
