Need to get winter tires, what size should I get

So i was noticing vibration and took my car in today. Alignment was way off and one of my tires has a seperated ply and can't be balanced. For now I had them rotate it from the front to the back and actually after the alignment and rotation the car is driving like brand new! $120 well spent for sure!
Even though the car is driving fine now I want to replace the tires with dedicated winters. I have 225-50-17 on there right now and I know the optional size is 245-45-17.
Which size should I get, price difference doesn't matter ?

The narrower tire the better handling in snow. If You drive a lot in deeper snow I would even downsize from 225 width. Other than that You will be fine with 225. Do not get 245's! Waste of money and handling in winter conditions will be worse!

Thats what I was thinking too. I can get a pretty fantastic deal on a set of Hankook Winter I Pike's and think I'm going to go with them 
I have Eagle RSA's on there right now but they are discontinued so I can't just replace the tire and didn't really like the Eagle's anyways. Don't want to have a blowout in winter so better to be on the safe side.
In about 2 months hopefully I can put the summers back on!

I had that size on my previous winter wheels which were 17", but when I wanted to upgrade to 18" wheel I couldn't find a 225 tyre, so I had to go to 245/40 R18.

Anyone have any experience with the Goodyear triple tread? Local shop thinks this would be the best bet since I drive in the city and it's still an all season so a bit smoother then dedicated winters?

I had 18" Blizzaks on my 530. I have 19's on my M. You definitely want a decent sidewall, so don't go lower than 40 profile.

I love my new Michelin X-Ice winters. Quiet, good handling and go through the white stuff. Definitely go with the narrower tire.

Instead of dedicated winter tires, take a look at the new Conti DWS all season. I put them on my 535XI last fall, here in Colorado we have had our share of snow and ice this year and I am yet to spin,slip or slide. They are so quiet compared to the OEM runflats.
