Does anyone here know if you can add real-time traffic to a factory installed navi system?

Thanks!

It might be cheaper to buy a Garmin or Tom Tom with real time nav.

Yep, that's an undeniable truth. That said, the original question still stands. Is it even possible?

Well, ok, this forum is often blamed for the "mod bug", but do we step in when a fellow member is about to embark on a painful and SERIOUSLY expensive journey that will most likely render his/her car unusable for at least a couple of weeks and in the end probably still lead to nothing but a pissed off better half and a distinct feeling of disgruntled disappointment anyway? Do we stand in his/her way and protest? Do we save him/her the heartache, headache and the pain in the butt, or do we encourage him/her, like some sick sadomasochistic pervs and deride joy from an ever-lasting and never-ending struggle - the Saga of Men vs. the E60's electronics - do we let this continue? Are we morally obligated to save this guy all the trouble (and the cash)? Finally, do we have the moral right to shoot down someone's dream?

As predicted, I'll bite.

Thanks very much for your response. In the time it took you to write this diatribe, you could have simply replied:

No, it's not possible but you could completely replace your nav system to the tune of $3,000+. A waste but I'm not aware of your funding situation.
Yes, it's possible through a software update from the stealer and a $800 antenna upgrade. Could be in the shop for weeks, however.

Instead of using your vast knowledge to provide guidance you instead chose to patronize a new board member. Truly inspiring.

This board appears to be filled with mods costing thousands of dollars but don't add any functionality (e.g. wheels, M5 spoilers), but I'm given crap because I want to avoid traffic while I drive my large sales territory, saving me time and money? Surely I could buy a Tom Tom but that would clutter my windshield/dashboard and duplicate the basic services I already receive from my factory installed system.

This is why I love these boards.

I was not being patronizing, neither was I "busting your newbie balls" (to quote unknown) - if anything, I was busting the balls of those who may have told you "yeah, go ahead, spend 5-10 grand and gain nothing - it'll be a good experience". Sorry if I offended you in any way - it was never anywhere close to my intentions.

When I saw your question, something told me that you had a pretty good idea already about the headaches it would involve to do this. Here's a short recap: your 2007 Nav won't be able to use the traffic software, so you'll have to switch the Nav control unit. I'm guessing the part isn't cheap to begin with, but where you are likely to really hit the reefs is in making the newer nav unit work with the older electronics in your iDrive. This will most likely necessitate a new iDrive module. Which may not pair up with some of your engine electronics... countless number of doomsday scenarios are possible here, considering how much these cars rely on electronics.
