I wouldn't start using 400, that's pretty rough man. I would go with 800 first.
As for the badge. I dunno man, up-close, I guess you can appreciate it, but far away, it just looks like a black circle, or maybe even a hole.
Have to say I like my blacked out ones more -- for 1/12 of the price you paid for your murdered out (if I remember correctly, lol).

What kind of clear spray can are you using? i'd like to try this as i dont have a buffer. will it work on headlights as well?

I used just about any automotive clear paint in spray cans. But the biggest thing to remember is to get one with a good spray tip, and lay it down wet. Of course the expensive stuff you mix and put in a pro type sprayer would be better. What I used, works so I just went with it.
Yes you can use it on head lights just make sure to put on a wet coat. If you don't, after it is dry, just sand down and redo, or buff after sanding down the orange peel.
