While I am far from an expert on the topic, I have been reading m quite a bit of sources. It seems that the current 5-series has a digital and/or fiber optic connection/system. This means that the current official BWM/iPod connection method will not work (and why it can be hooked up to the 2003 5-series.)
From what I have seen, it _might_ be possible to install an aux adaptor. This, however, is less than ideal (IMO) since it connects via the mini-plug (lower sound quality than a digital connection, and iPod must still be used for all control functions).
There are a couple of 3rd party options that seem to have some potential.
The Dension Ice>Link plus: http://www.dension.com/main.php?pageid=50&topid=42
and the iCruze: http://www.monstercable.com/iCruze/default.asp
Both seem to go the BMW/iPod connection one better. However, neither is available yet and no specific mention is made of 2005 5-series compatibility.
Apple has their big MacWorld Expo show in SF this January. Smart money says to wait until then before spending any real money on an iPod solution. With the popularity of the iPod, there are bound to be several announcements at that show. Until then, an FM transmitter solution should hold you over.

Thanks for the friendly welcome. I guess that "Posts: 1" in the sidebar kinda stands out.
I have been lurking for a few days, and have already learned a lot from the posts here. Look forward to learning more and (hopefully) helping others with questions.
