My 6 speed knob is getting pretty worn out and chipping some. I am looking for an aftermarket replacement. Anyone done this and have any suggestions? I want something pretty close to the same length as the current knob.

It's BMW, not aftermarket, and a little shorter than stock, but I really like mine.

I added the shift knob from the Z4 M Roadster - I think that is the same as the pic above....

Yes, they used that knob in the ZHP. They use the same knob in the 550 ZSP. The only difference is the 550 knob lacks the M logo. It shortens the shifter travel a bit.

realoem.com should help you get a part number.

I got mine from a guy on ebay ("bimmer bum" who list a lot of BMW knobs), he has one listed now with a 5 speed emblem, but not with the 6 speed. I was never able to find the part number looking at realoem or talking to Garry at Newport, but I didn't know what vehicle used it originally. If you know the ZHP or Z4 M roadster used it you should be able to look it up (I was thinking the Z4 M one may be similar but with perforated leather?). Getting it off ebay I think I paid about $80 shipped.

If you are getting one off ebay why not get the 6 speed one which has a light to show the shift pattern.
