my muffler shop did a header-back full 2.5 inch exhaust for like ~$140. The place is Johnny Franklin's Muffler in San Rafael, CA for all you Bay Area guys. The owner is a good guy, he will build anything you want for a reasonable price.
The stock muffler is around $600 from the dealer.

Well guys, here is the video of my exhaust on my car. I know, its not MY video, but seriously, this guy did such a good job and it sounds EXACTLY like what my car sounds like. Plus since my engine is the same one that was in the e39 530, its exactly the same tone. There is no point to making a different video. Just listen to this! Its great! It does sound better in person, too. Anyways, one of the best mods so far.

Well, I just got my muffler and made an appointment at a local Midas to have it installed after work in Palatine off Dundee / Rte 12. Well, warning - DON'T GO THERE. Bunch of damn idiots. The guy put the Bimmer on the lift, took a look at the 3" pipe coming out of the car, took at look at the 2 1/2" pipe coming out of the MagnaFlow, and got all confused. He looked at me and said "Gee, this is going to take a long time to install. I'm not sure if I can do this." So I go to his manager and he says "I'm not very comfortable working on your car here." GODDAMMIT. YOU COULDN'T HAVE TOLD ME THAT AN HOUR AGO WHILE I SAT HERE WAITING FOR YOU TO JUST LIFT THE CAR AND LOOK?
So I leave, an hour later. Now its too late to get it installed someplace else by day's end.
I go to another indy shop. Now its around 5:30PM. All of these shops range from $85-$99 per hour in labor. The next shop says they can do it but no one, NO ONE can give me a quote of how much it will cost to install it.
Guys, I went to 4 different muffler shops and all of them scratched their heads. I f@#king give up. This state sucks d#%@. I'm just going to strap my goddam Magnaflow to my bumper and hope that as air passes through it at high speed it will make a farting sound.

Well......quick update.
I got the exhaust installed for $170!!! RAPE. 2 hours labor basically at $85. I was so pissed off. Regardless, they did a great job on it and were nice enough to drive my car back to my work instead of having me come pick it up. I almost feel its not my damn fault they work slow and were meticulous with it. They quoted over the phone that "there was a lot of bend / weld work done and they wanted to make sure it was truly done to perfection." Well, whatever. I paid about $70 more than I should have.
I'll post pics and a video soon! =P
