My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

Previously I had liked my 545 rims over any other options. Now, seeing the style 166 rims, I want them.

When running down the road, they look less like a dish and appear to have more lip to them.

My concern is ride. 90% of my driving is highway (18k+ miles per year) with 10% of performance fun - am I going to notice a big degrade in my ride on the freeway with going from the 18" to 19" rims?

Secondly, I know this was addressed at one time but can't find the threads. Can the 166 rims be purchased and mounted with the m5 size tires without any interference problems (255/40-19 & 285/35-19)?

the M166s are nice, i think you may find that the 19"s run smoother than the 18"s from what others have reported, i run 19"s and they are smooth as ice ...

heres a thread to follow where another member has done this: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=15597&st=0

Thanks. So, is with the big gap, are these the same size tires that are used on the M5? Or, is the ride height of the M5 lower?

I don't like the gap, but I did not want to lower my car. I would think you could get the same overall diameter with the 19's as with my 18's.

Since I replied to your other two threads, I might as well chime in on this one as well.

The improve ride people feel when they switch from 18s to 19s is assumed to be because they had run-flat tires on their 18s but switched to regular tires when they upgraded to 19s. The non-run-flat tires don't have such stiff side walls so they're smoother.

Having said that, why not just go for 20s??!!! With your car's sports package and 20" wheels, the gap is very minimal. I actually think my car with 20s rides the same if not better than my original 18s with run-flats. Either that or I love my new wheels so much, I'm blind to any problems.

I think the car in that thread is an xi, so that accounts for much of the gap. Look here for maximum supported sizes.

I know people stray outside of these recommendations, so even though the M5 wheels are bit large they may be fine.

...actually, from what others have reported, the 19"s RFs are much smoother than the 18"s RFs, i dont have the comparison in mind, but mine are 19" RFs and i do not feel any noticable hardness as many report with the 18s...there was some discussion on this point in some other thread recently that you may want to review as well....

As far as I knew, the R10s came in only one choice of black and I thought it was gloss black but it looked more like gunmetal when I got them. I was a bit disappointed at first and was going to have it repainted but I've grown to like them. They actually look good with the saphire black.

How come you can't get them in Europe?

From the previous thread, the 166 wheels have a lot of gap. I am not sure what tire sizes where used.

The max tire sizes listed for the 19's would give the same overall diameters within 0.03/0.08 inches, but those tire sizes are not offered in all brands.

I know the m5 wheels in the front are about 1.5" bigger diameter (compared to the stock 18's) and the M5 front fenders are bigger.

However will the m5 rear tires fit on the e60 without any clearance problems? They are about 1.25" bigger diameter.

The recommendations from BMW are a direct 19" tire that has the same fit as the 18's. The problem is that those sizes are not readily available.

I just checked with my local tire supplier with regards to the 19" 166 style wheels.
Thier system recommendations for the E60 545i are:

Front 255-35-19 Diameter +.31, Width +.40
Rear 285-30-19 Diameter +.15, Width +.40

These should allow the 166 style 19" with a slightly smaller gap as to what I currently have.

Also, there are a lot of available tires in these sizes, including the Mich PS2's.

Does anyone have any information that would conflict with this?
