What do you mean by spring rate? What are the effects?

It's got to do w/ the weight of the car, 525/530 in a way is 'lighter' than say 545/550 or even M5 mainly on the engine weight but effect the overall weight and stuff so the 'heavier' model more than likely to have higher spring rate and if you put it on the 'lighter' model it'll probably too stiff and effect the handling.

If you notice after market spring maker like H&R and/or Eibach has a diff. part nbr. for 525/530 model than 545/550 or even M5 due to mainly on their diameter/thickness and ride height differences that mostly make up the spring rate.

So should I just go aftermarket instead of going with the m5 springs?

Yes, go with aftermarket springs. Checkout H&R. Most people here have them or as an alternative Eibach.
