I was thinking about swapping out the stockers with a pair or m5 or m6 wheels, does anyone know if they will simply bolt on and live happily inside a 545's wheel wells?

+1 . And you can add a pair of spacers for the rear for more appeal .

You can also do 285/30 19's in the rear with the 166 M5 wheel. You can get a 166 M6 wheel that has a different offset but the biggest tire then is the 275.

Are spacers completed safe as if with no spacers? What mm size should be used?

Usually, most people use 12mm spacers with 167 and 166 wheels.
