The only difference is the hub offset. The Style 166 wheel is set out further from the hub than the 172 by 6mm on the front and 4mm on the rear.
And because of this offset the 255/19 and 285/19 wont fit on the regular E60? Is it too far out and will cause it to rub or will it only rub in bumps / turns?

I'm trying to see whats the definition of "not recommended"

I mean if they still "fit" and will only rub with a full load of people then that might be ok...

and will need to see how far off it'll make the speedo.

Thats true... this is what I found for odometer / speed difference on the net.

The real question is does the M5 stock wheels / tires wont FIT at all on the regular E60 or is it that it'll just rub in some situations? or does it rub too much to actually be used...

And what really does "not recommended" mean?

No problems fitting 19" M5 OEM wheels to your E60.I fitted them to my 535D sport about a 6 weeks ago no problems with catching etc but you need to fit 2453519 to the front and 2753019 to the rear.

My question is what will happen if we put on the 255/40R-19 and 285/35R-19 besides the Speedo being off will it fit?

If not how does it not fit? will it rub all the time? will it just plain NOT FIT? or will it only rub over bumps?

I think the answer is that it will probably work, and that yes, you may get some rubbing. How much rubbing I can't tell you, but the M5 does have bigger wheelwells and fenderwells. And while BMW's official recommendations may be conservative, they usually are there for a reason. I'd stick with 245/35-19 and 275-30/19 unless you want to be the guinea pig for this. I have seen other posters say that 285's do rub on the rear. No, not all the time, but you don't want the possibility of rubbing with a load or certain road surfaces, either. The 255 and 285 are only 10mm (0.39") wider, and also slightly higher profile. Do you need that for some reason? It's also nicer in my opinion to stay with the same aspect ratio so your speedometer isn't off...

Well I was considering buying them off a M5 owner... and of course they'll come with tires... so what am I going to do with the tires? Just a thought you know... seeing if I can use it or not. If I cant use either the 255s or the 285s then buying the M5 wheel / tire set might not be a good idea; if I can use the 255s and cant use the 285s then maybe... if I can use the 255 and 285 then YA I'll prob get them.

Here's what I'm thinking:

I recently put 10mm Eibach spacers on my rear wheels (Style 172).
- Assuming the M5 wheels protrude 6mm more than the Style 172 wheels
- With the spacers my wheels are protruding 4mm more than the stock M5 setup.

Now if you are adding tyres that are 10mm wider it means 5mm extra protrusion from stock, hence 1mm more than my setup.

The bottom line is I get no rubbing at all, so I would be surprised if that 1mm is enough to cause a problem.
