Hi guys,

i have a question for you all:

first of all; what do you think about putting a gastank in the car because of the raising prices of Petrol here...?

2.): Is there anybody who has done it already in his BMW?

3.): What about the extra weight?

4.): Would it really be a good solution e.g. Is mileage that much better?

5.): What about installation costs?

6.): What about the lost of space in the trunk?

And then finally: what about the sound you get from the nice petrol engine; does that dissapear?

I hope to get some good response

Thanks all of you

AFAIK you need more LPG than fuel, so it almost equals up.
One BIG minus for LPG is the fact that you're not allowed to use any garage with a LPG tank in your car.

Thank you BMW ///M 525xi for your patience.

I had somehow managed to totally fu** this up and not just moved the two threads, I then also deleted the wrong one, not the one I was asked to delete, so you had to post it again.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience!

Hey, said it already; really no problem.

I'm glad there are such nice guys like you to set up a forum like this, otherwise i wouldn't be able to post such questions to all of you and would have to consider it all by myself.

Like the fact about those garages, didn't knew that .

Thanks again

my girl's dad and her sister installed LPG in their cars and they both have a 4.2L petrol engine - Audi. And it works fine. And it is the new LPI system with injectors so the power is the same and it consumes pretty much the same as fuel. LPI uses the same fuel as LPG - which is more than double cheaper than petrol so its always better.

But diesel still rules. We filled our tanks in Katowice, Poland (i was using my 535d) - and we cruised towards and past Krakow at about 240km\h average speed. I used up 1/4 tank and he emptied his tank completely !!! hahaha.

what do you think about putting a gastank in the car because of the raising prices of Petrol here...?
If I had a petrol engine - I would do it right away - first thing in the morning.
As I chose 520d - to see for myself how these new "famous" diesels work these days - the question of LPG is out...

Is there anybody who has done it already in his BMW?
I did it in my previous E39 (528i). I would do it again anytime - as it was the best thing I could do - low costs (even a bit lower than diesel's), and the performance at the same time - of course, you have to choose the right LPG installation, as there are many different ones on the market.

What about the extra weight?
Never noticed any difference, really. E39 was heavy enough without any add-ons...

Would it really be a good solution e.g. Is mileage that much better?
There are two factors to consider here:
1) volume of the tank you can put inside: if you put smaller (in spare place) tank - it will let you approx. drive for 400km, you can choose to put a huge 80L tank in the trunk - then you drive for 800km, but the downside: no trunk space anymore...
2) on the other hand: economics.. - you will drive at half price, so even if you have to tank every 400km, I would say - it is still worth it...

What about installation costs?
Paid 6000PLN (about 1500 EUR) for mine. It was the best, latest model on the market at that time, with direct gas injection into all 6 cylinders, 50L tank in the spare-wheel place (brand: PRINZ - Dutch production). There are calulators online which allow you to re-calculate how much you will save by installling LPG, all you need to put is no of km per year, cost of LPG and gasoline in your area, and it will show you how long before the installation costs is paid-off, and then ... you drive for half-price

What about the lost of space in the trunk?
I lost nothing - as my tank is in the spare-wheel place. I only carry my spare wheel now if I go into long journeys, for everyday driving I leave it out.

what about the sound you get from the nice petrol engine; does that dissapear?
No sound change, no feeeling - if you choose the right LPG system for your car you will never notice that anything happened to the car in terms of performance or sound or smell - just the nice surprise at the LPG gas station...

Based on my experience - I will recommend it to everybody.
And the LPG is still only about 0,51 EUR per litre in Luxembourg...

No I would not do it. For one very simple reason:

The price of car fuel - be it petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG - is largely determined by taxation; oil going from $35/barrel to $70/barrel actually means an increase in the price of fuel of ~5% at current levels of European taxation, a little more than that in the US.

At the moment, as they are relatively unpopular, LPG and CNG are not taxed as heavily as petrol or diesel. But all it takes is a political decision to reverse this... (and we can all guess which way taxation levels would be harmonized in that case).

Plus, all the other disadvantages: consumption, rough(er) engine, noise, loss of space and extra cost to install the conversion, though judging from other replies some of these may be things of the past. (Last LPG car I was in was a Volvo S80 - and it did not impress me at all!)

Hi,

I have LPG in my E60, and if you did a search on this site for LPG you would have found my posting about this LPG sytem:

LPG / Alternative fuel system

Now I have drivin 50.000 km with this sytem without any problems:
the savings:

4500 euro's till now.

The cost of the installation is 2200 euro's

So I saved 2300 euro's last year, and next year it will be 4500 euro's (50k per year)
