E, I don't think you've explicitely said this but probably implied it with the testing on the AFE and Injen intakes but do you believe all open filter element intakes rob power? If so, does that mean all tuners out there making these types of intakes are wrong regardless of what car it goes in?

What i've read/heard a lot of aluminum cold air intakes dont do that much because a lot of time time they are run down by the engine and that aluminum pipes heats up because of the engine heat which obviously heats up the air going through the intake and making it useless. right?

Not for this guy. I bet his open element intake gets plenty of cool air:

I wonder if hot air is really a problem for this guy... it looks like its -10 degrees!

I would NEVER put anything like that on my car. NEVER. The funniest thing when I see things like this at SEMA or other shows is that I always ask the guys, "where does the cold air come from?" and they either stay quiet or they make up some ridiculous answer.

Those induction filters with the flat tops and flat bases are very turbulant. They have air coming in at 360d and it has no funneling to go into the tubing. The wheel well intakes have the advantage of drawing in temperatures that are not as hot as the engine bay but they also suffer from being in a low air pressure region. Ah, the great lengths people go through to try to improve over the stock box.

Here is an example of the intake I made. The tubing is polished aluminum (which I would have in plastic if I had a choice) and the intake box I made covers the entire induction filter.

I took a screen shot of one of my tuning maps. This graph shows how the spark timing relates to the IATs. As you can see, the hotter the air, the more timing is pulled.

It really doesnt matter if its cold outside. It doesnt make up for a hot air intake. The reason is, if the weather is cold outside, you should be sucking in the air that is closest to ambient temp. If its cold outside and your car runs ok with a hot air intake, its still not running as good as it can be if you were to have the proper intake system.

BTW, Eurocarfan, which other tuner dynos the E60 more than we do? Our E60 test cars (where we test our intake, exhaust, headers, etc.) have between 88 and 142 dyno pulls! Some guys cry uncle when they see me do 4-5 runs on their car without a serious cool down. lol

Hey Eloy, I have no doubt you guys do the most testing on the E60. I was just referring to other tuners out there that currently offer open filter elements for current cars like Audi and Porsches; companies like AWE Tuning, Stasis..etc... Besides for Dinan, seems like every other company offers an open filter intake. That's only from my limited exposure to info. There might be a ton of other companies out there that offer enclosed intakes that I'm not aware of.

i know bro. Most people can sell stuff like that because it "looks" like its something that will actually do something. AFE issues a challenge to us. I said bring it on. They never showed up.
