I'm just throwing this info out there as I personally when it comes to mods like to keep it simple soo... I would definitely prefer to run the stock air box with a drop in as well...I'm not b/c of other testing that I have seen. I'd love to see more data...

Pretty extensive open element vs stock air box testing was done over at n54 a while back. I will look for the thread(s). Anyway, I believe the conclusion was that with stock/slightly raised boost levels the stock air box was the way to go since open element made no improvements. However, once the boost was turned up much higher than stock the air box would actually produce a pressure drop/resistance and cause a loss of power. At high boost levels the n54 made more power with an open element rather than the stock air box.

Obviously this applies only to the turbo N54 motors that are running aggressive tunes (if you have stock tune/not high boost tune or a NON-turbo e60 stock air box is probably the way to go). I'd love to see more back to back testing on n54 running high boost.

As a side note...In my personal setup I am running full time water/meth injection so even if the temps are increased by the open element my water/meth cools the charge down before going into the motor....so I am more concerned with pressure drop. Like I said if more data is brought forward on high boost cars proving this wrong I would gladly go back to the stock air box
+1 for seeing some tests with a jb3 or procede....the 535i tested in this thread AFAIK does have dinan S2 on it....

I also recall talks on n54tech regarding an open air vs stock air temps by terry that showed minimal temp difference between the two....

but 1 member did report better trap speeds via a gtech with stock box vs. dci...

have you ran any 1/4 miles lately now that you've gotten your water/meth kit going?

Back on topic: In most of my research BMW has made the intake about as good as it gets.

I have been trying to get out to the track but something comes up pretty much every weekend We know the map 7 is more aggressive than the 1.0 that I was running before. My data logs show that I am in spec as far as timing goes with map 7 so the car should def be running harder. Seat of the pants agrees with this as the car has more power down low and pulls stronger through the upper band as well. Overall it "feels" amazing...I will get some numbers to go along with that as soon as I can.

your post are great!! just wanted to see if anyone had anything else to suggest!

I think the scoop is a must from what i've read. Filter, scoop, and exhaust. How much HP gain is this going to give me?
Although the hp numbers dont add up like they would individually, it all depends on how everything was tested. For example on ryan's car, we got 5-7whp from the scoop, then another 7whp+ with the exhaust. We havent dynoed his car again with the tune yet but it is safe to say he got around 14whp with the scoop and exhaust at 70mph.

I have to disagree. At this point, you are making more power from more boost and not because you are keeping IATs in check. More boost = more heat. The HAI or hot air intake sucks in hot air period. It doesnt matter if you have the scoop blowing cooler air towards the filter. The induction or open element filter will STILL suck in all the air around it. In this case, there is no completely sealed box so its going to get some cool and some hot air. Running water/meth to compensate for using a HAI is ridiculous. You want to keep all the temps as low as possible. I hear a lot of people say, "My intercooler is good so it doesnt matter that I have the hot air intake." The outlet temperature is a result of the charge coolers thermal efficiency. If you suck in hotter air, its going to have hotter air coming out of the intercooler PERIOD.

Here is a useful tool: http://raceprecision.com/media/chargecooler_te.htm

BTW, water/meth DOESN't cool intake air temperatures. The intake air temps are hot hot enough to evaporate the water/meth.

youre sure? based on what? your opinion?
just kind of assumed that a plastic piece pushing air towards the filter cant really be tweaked that much to where its going to make a significant difference in HP testing. Is there test to prove that my opinion is wrong?

E, I saw on a few posts a member that has a jb3 comment that if he could go back he would just go with an RPi/PC flash...do you guys have a tune/flash available for the n54 engine/x35 models?

PC does have a tune for it but I have not been able to confirm the claimed hp gain myself yet. I will let you all know once I get to do a before/after myself.

Injen is trying to argue our testing procedures. Aparently, we didnt dyno the same car! LMFAO. Really? It looked like the same car, it had the same VIN number and the car was brought to us by a big filipino scary man. Oh yeah and you need to run race gas when you test their intakes.

of course injen is going to argue your results

Nice, thanx for replying RE: the PC tune as well E
