After reading most of the threads on this forum about the K&N Filter, I still have a couple questions about this product. I know that a lot of members have either had this item on their car on still have by now, so my question is if it's worth the $60-70? I've read that it doesn't make a noticeable difference in sound or performance. I'm considering purchasing the aFe cold air intake if this is the case, but I have also read that this intake actually decreases power.

I would recommend the RPI scoop and BMC filter. DO NOT go with the AFE intake which will LOSE horsepower. Please PM me to purchase the RPI combo. Since you are in So Cal stop by and I'll install it for free.

Joe, I thought the aFe only lost power on the V8? I haven't seen any reviews on the 6 Cyl engines, they seem to do well on the E46 and E9X 6-Cyl models.

As far as a filter replacement, it won't completely transform your car but if you are due for a filter replacement, it's a good choice. You will benefit more from an intake but again, don't expect night and day changes. The car is well tuned from the factory so there is only so much room with NA mods.

Hi Nick,

No the power lose was with the 525i/530i/528i/535i/545i/550i/M5. I know for a fact the 335i lost power as well too because my cousin has a 335i coupe w/6 spd that HAD the AFE intake with their ridiculous scoops, plus his JB2 and I had an automatic 335i sedan from BMW as a loaner and I killed him from 0-100. After we yanked the POS AFE intake and scoops we ran again and he killed me Honestly AFE is junk.

its not like a monthly maintenance... you can go 10+k miles before washing & oiling.

i knew it wasnt monthly but wasnt sure when it had to be done. i just know at some point you have to do it. also seems like some people over oil their filters and mess up their maf sensors.

Most people do over oil it...so lightly spray one coat and that will do just fine

Just so I'm clear, BMC says regenerate (clean/oil) every 25,000 km. I assume that the filter comes pre-oiled when we buy them? I just ripped it out of the bag and dropped it in. I hope this was righe?

Thanks for anyone's help.

+1 for RPI ram air scoop and aftermarket filter combo, been the best intake setup for our e60s.

yes the filters come pre-oiled most members instead of buying those oil kits just end up buying another filter when its time for them to be replaced.
