My Ride: 2004 545i / Orient Blue (I think) / Tan int / 116's Wheels / ... my favorite option, the HEATED steering wheel! Previous cars retired: 2006 Corvette Z51, 2002 Corvette Coupe, 2002 Mustang, 1997 Maxima, 1994 Camry, 1990 Supra None, and I mean none compare to this 545i. The 06 Corvette was faster, but not by much...

Hey all, just traded my 2006 Corvette for my 545i and I am not looking back!! What a machine this car is.

Anyways, I am looking at the options for the Ipod interface. I have a 4th gen 30 GB Ipod and would like to be able to control it through the idrive and have it come through the logic 7 sound quanlity.

Is this something I just get done at the dealer, or is it better to do a Tweeter or audio store? I just worry about those audio houses because stuff always seems to rattle after they mess with the panels.

Any suggestions and rough estimates in pricing would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,

If you are prepared to lose your CD changer you can purchase an iPod interface kit from your BMW dealer. This is a cable with an iPod dock connector on one end which would be fitted inside the glove compartment. The dealer can fit it for you (or you could do it yourself). This allows you to control the iPod over iDrive.

Depending on his build date that may not be the case! If it is an early '04 without Navigation, the iPod interface is a no go!! For later models, Raighne is correct. Do a search on the forum, there is a SIB (service bulliten) that details the dates where the iPod is possible. As I recall, if you have Navigation, that means you have Professional Radio which means it is possible. No Nav in early builds means Business Radio and no iPod connectivity...

Even if you can't do the full integration with iDrive, at least you should be able to do the Aux Input which allows playback but all controls are at the iPod level, not the iDrive level (except volume). Not great, but it works!

I am fine controlling the Ipod, just mainly want the level of sound to be better than the aux jack.

Thanks for the info

Thanks,

I paid $225 installed at KNAUZ in the northern suburbs of Chicago... I think I got a killer deal and it sounds AMAZING!

Right, maybe if you provided the build date of you car we could be of more help. There is a sticker inside the driver's door with the build date.

The Service bulletin has been updated and now the iPod interface can be installed on E60s from Start of Production

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is only on cars w/ Navigation and therefore those w/ Professional Radio. The original poster has still not indicated if he has Nav or the build date of the car...

I knew I had that document somewhere, it just took me a little while to dig it out. As long as you have CIP version 23 or higher, it can be retrofitted, starting with vehicles prod. date 09/03 (I believe this is SOP) regardless of Navi or not.
I hope this helps.

For interfacing an iPod to the car, there is only one choice, and that's BMW's Interface for iPod.

It's really a great interface (I've had one since last June) and is as close to controlling the actual iPod as you'll get.

Only available from your friendly BMW dealer. Prices will vary from dealer to dealer. Expect with installtion $450-550.

N.b. If your car is still under warranty, the upgrade of your car's software to Progman 23 or higher is covered by warranty and you do not have to pay even if the upgrade is performed at the time of installation.
