iPod Connectivity/Recognition issue

I have a ipod that is having sporadiac recognisition issues. For example, I unplugged my ipod and uploaded some tunes, I then went and reconnected it to my ipod interface. And now the CD option is grayed out. I have a solid connection and have shook the wires but still the CD menu is grayed out. Anyone else run into this issue.
