My Ride: '05 545i, silver gray, black leather with anthracite maple wood, sport package, premium sound, navigation, cold weather package, electric rear sunshade, folding rear seat, satellite radio prep, PIAA 4150K fogs, red rear reflectors, hardwired Valentine One
Aux input is the only option at this point. Do a search and you'll find lots of posts, including my hardwire install.

The problem with the use of the aux input, I have learned, is that the audio quality is not as good as when the output from the main connector is used. Using the aux input puts the iPods amp in the circuit, and while its an ok amp to drive cheapie ear buds, the audio quality is better when using the output from the larger connector that mounts at the bottom of the iPod.
I used an aux input connection in my X3, and I'm happy for now using the Monster brand FM modulator in my E60. I'm holding out for total control of the iPod via iDrive, including seeing the names of all tracks on the display. 'Til then I'm ok with the FM modulator.

You can avoid the audio degradation of the headphone jack by using a line-level out from the iPod's dock connector. Here's an example of one that will work with the AUX connector from BMW.

MacWorld starts this Tuesday; possible there might be an announcement of a new adaptor or other iPod solution (either from BMW or a third party) then. MB rolled out their iPod kit at the show a few years back... I would check Gizmodo or Engadget Tuesday/Wednesday for news...
