No welding required, nope. The clamp they provide you with works great. I'd make sure you put some of the high-temp High-Temp RTV Silicone stuff on it to make sure it's a good seal. Not sure if it's required (in one of RPI's guides they don't use it.. in others they do..), but it definitely doesn't hurt and will ensure a good seal.

As for lifting.. I would at least back up the car on some ramps. If you're small and flexible you could maybe do it without anything else, but it won't be comfortable
Jacking up the car could work too, but remember.. never go underneath the car with just a hydraulic jack holding it up! Jackstands are your friend.
