Inner Barrel of VMR VB3's

I have 19" VMR VB3's in gunmetal grey...
as a previous post stated i was gonna paint the inside barrel part black...well i took one today to wash it and felt the inside. It doesn't feel like metal...it's textured and kind of feels like plastic. Looks like its painted all the same...but it just feels different?
Does anyone know if the inside is coated wth something?

it's most likely painted with something to protect the raw finish underneath.
