Get Britax if you can afford it - about $250 per carseat. You can use it for infants (rear-facing) and forward facing for upto 40 lbs. The Britax one's are considered the safest car seats and are always recommended by MB and BMW. We have two of these for our 2 yr old son.
If you want convenience, then there are quite a few 'travel systems" on the market. These come with a stroller, an infant car seat and a base which you can install permanently in the car. You can then transfer the car seat from the base to the stroller. We used the Graco for our son when he was an infant.

Great timing on the resurrection of this thread, as MacSid Jr. is due to arrive at the end of Sep, and we've been doing our research. I've not seen Britax seats in this neck of the woods other than the ones in BMW's accessories catalog. They have a great seat that grows with your kid as well (use from 9 months to 7 years) and, of course, in a range of colours to match your car and upholstery. No prizes for guessing what we're thinking.
Still need to do a little searching on the seat for newborns, which we'll obviously need for the first 9 months or so for the little guy, but I'm not seeing much around other than the range of Maxi-Cosis. Anyone got any other suggestions?

Which brand/model of infant car seat fits best in our E60?
Peg Perego?
Graco?
Combi?
Or any?

I am currently looking for a Britax Monarch(Booster seat) but it was discontinued 1/2008. Maybe someone can help me with this. I can't find this to purchase on the internet as yet.

started off with a graco snugride + snap n go stroller. It is light and easy for my wife to handle if she is by herself, unlike those big travel systems. Just bought the Graco Ipo stroller which also can hold the car seat, but is a front facing seated stroller as well...so good for transitioning. When our daughter outgrows the rear facing car seat and will need a forward facing seat I will go with a Britax as well. When she outgrows the Britax, I will most likely get a Recaro...

We have a Britax in the wifes car and the Recaro in my car. Both seats are great but the Recaro seems like it is built a little better as the materials used seem stronger. The Britax belts work better and smoother but the Recaro fits and hold my daughter better. Also when she falls asleep in the Recaro, the head bolsters hold her head straight and wont let her neck bend. Both car seats are great.

take a look at which, they have done extensive tests and comparisons.

make sure you check out the crash test video, that should help you decide which one to get.
