I like to try putting my own "aux" imput in so I can directly hard wire my satallite radio. I'm assuming all you need to do is run a mini plug (female) adapter to two RCA imputs on the back of the radio. So here's my question. where is the "radio" unit located and how do i get to it? (I'm figuring it can't be too hard if all they are charging at BMW is like $275.00.

Will the "Aux" input show-up on the iDrive, or will you need to do something to activate it?

I highly doubt that it's as easy as you think, Hpdrifter. Even if it was that easy, you'd have to reprogram the software to recognize it...

I actually did this myself. I had the dealer program the I-drive for the Aux icon in the entertainment menu, then a week later installed the jack myself. There are no RCA cables in the back of the head unit. BMW uses proprietary connectors made by Tyco Electronics that plug in the back of the CCC. I happen to have bought a box of these connectors directly from Tyco since I broke one of mine. Other than that its straight forward, took less than half an hour. I always wondered if i needed to pay the dealer $50 to program the I-drive or if the computer would have recognized the aux input automatically after I installed it or plugged my Ipod into it.

Good luck

interesting thought about programming.when i first had car on my idrive there was an icon for aux input, since the car has been reprogrammed i have lost this icon in the setup screen. It used to read ...select aux input --- icon ----- icon..
you then selected the source.
now i have no selection options.
my question also is ? does the idrive1. search for devices
2.need programming to specific device
3.only allow dealer to program what he wants.
not sure if this topic has been answered before or just discussed, will have a look and post you.i suspect iceman answerde this before..

You can get an idea of "typical" BMW installation using this bulletin. You could do it this way (purchase parts) or try it using singss method. Either way, BMW needs to program iDrive to recognize Aux as an available source in audio system. No Plug and Play here

You might fit the harness yourself, but you still need to visit the dealer to get the Idrive reprogrammed.
