THIS!

The instrument cluster is a redundant storage location for the odometer and the programming syncs the instrument cluster to the existing CAS/LM/ECU. You should not get any errors though from any other modules.

The instrument cluster is a pretty dumb device. It simply reads the k_can data and a couple of other analog inputs and converts to information for the driver...

miguex does a great job if u want to code ur vin into it. If u want free miles then do nothing.
They aren't exactly 'free' - they just aren't displayed on the cluster. Other data sources will give away the truth though.

Oops. When I was changing out my needles, I forgot to unplug the battery. Will this show the dealer somehow next time I go in for service that my cluster was removed from the harness and that my odometer isn't necessarily a true indicator of my mileage?

Or is it because my cluster is the original one with my VIN coded into it that no matter whether it was removed or not with the battery still connected that the mileage is valid?

Sorry in advance for the stupid question!

This is so true. Mileage is transfer via CANBUS parallel from ECU to cluster and vice versa...There is a shut off switch tho for free miles!!!

More details about this switch please!

Does the dealer really check other sources to verify mileage other than the cluster?

I don't see why they wouldn't, it's so easy. Even the key fobs contain the mileage information (as well as a wealth of other info).

Hi Rich, You might get error message. Only due to the fact, that the cluster has to match the specs of your car. I bought your old cluster and when i plugged it into my car, I got active steering message and another error since I dont have active steering on my car. So there is a possibility you will get errors. I think I also got Dynamic Drive error too. So weird.

Just an FYI.

i was told that there really isnt a way to "hide" your true mileage. you can change the cluster and i think you would have to reprogram the cars computers somehow. I was told by someone in a bmw dealer that it is nearly impossible to truly "hide" it, but i think it can be done. Is it really worth it is the true question?...

I just need some clarification. I just picked up an m5 cluster and wanted to install it in my car. Will I get the miles on the cluster or the miles that are on my car to appear once its connected? I dont care much for the dot next to the miles. In disconnecting the battery do I disconnect both terminals or just the negative?

Thanks in advance for your help.
