My new car has got the new idrive but not the Logic 7 sound system...the stock (standard) sounds like CRAP!!! TOTAL CRAP!!! My friends 650i has it and it sounds SICK!!! when set on Concert hall unlike mine 
..... all I get is this BIG BASS THUMP on high volume which is fuckin gay and annoying ! I don't give a shit I'm goin to BMW tommorow and ask them to install it... I know its not an easy job.. Well TOUGH! they should handle it

You can probably save a lot of time and $$$$ by going to a good, reputable audio shop and having them upgrade your system for you. It's what I did. I could've done it myself, but with so many computers in our cars I decided to let a shop handle it and deal with any problems that might arise.

Normally I'm a DIY'er, but with this car I prefer to get a warranty for everything, that way if something does go wrong I am not out many, many $$$$$. If you can get a shop you trust I would go with the Bavarian Sounwerks speaker pkg:

Sound deadening is stuff like Dynamat:

It greatly reduces vibration (like decklid, window or license plate frames) and reduces road noise intrusion. It's always a good idea when upgrading your sound system.

I would actually suggest getting your dealer to programme the Logic 7 into the car and then using a MOST interface to add your own DSP. Your car will sound a lot better than your friends 6 with an aftermarket DSP.

My Ride: 04 545i sport, stick, L7, sat, nav. Charcoal/ runflat/ cdv delete.
Suede headliner/ trunk, 3 way front speakers, four 8" subs in rear shelf, ACM, iPod dock in ash tray using gateway 500 with MP3 text and video on screen, MRTM aluminum pedals/ door pins, 10 farad cap, sound processor, line conditioner, 2 amps ( 4x100 and 2x200)
Converting all the way over to Logic 7 is going to cost so much money I just do not see it being worth it. The L7 subs are listed at $670 each on real oem, not to mention each of the 4 tweeters and 7 midranges costs $100-200 each as well. Your going to need to run speaker wires into the rear doors, dash, and fiber optic cables to the L7 amp. And of course you have to change some hardware in order to use the L7 software as well. I just do not see a dealer or DIY getting it done. It is just way too cost prohibitive. But if your going to do it anyway, why not go all the way up to the "Individual audio system" sometimes called the M-audio system with extended bass instead of just the L7?
What you could do for much less money is to spend the $800 on the Audison bit one processor, and use it with the high level inputs. You can use the processor to create a center channel signal, as well as control your whole system. I would recommend buying 2 four channel amps with about 100 watts x 4 each to make the best use of your 8 channel processor. You could use earthquake subs for the up front bass, BSW speakers for midrange and treble if you like. You could have a 10" or 12" in the trunk if needed. Of course custom front speaker installation of brand "X" speakers is an option.
And when you get it all done, if your still not happy, you could then go out and buy the ( if available by then ) Mobridge PA1000 to get optical input from your car to the Audison bit one. ( this would require the L7 programming like Bruce said of course ).
