Mainly as rodybmw has said already.

Two things here, main dealers usually don't have the slightest clue anyway, if it's not on their monitor screen. I don't know about the US, but UK dealers will only sell you m-parts (like the wheels) when you can give them an M5 chassis number. Also the wheel tyre combination is not for another E60 as the M5 runs totally different sizes and aspect ratios. The wheel itself is not the slightest problem.

Dear e60 Forum Members:

I am in a bind and need your help. I am told by a BMW dealer in Atlanta that the BMW OEM 19 inch 166m rims will not fit a non M5! I am told the reason why they will not work on a non M5 is because of the massive braking system on the M5 only works properly with this new hub type 19inch 166m rims, and I will have to stay with the 18 inch 135 M rim.

QUESTION: Does anybody here at e60 actually have the new 2006 BMW OEM 166 rims on your non e60 M5? Do you have any problems, and if so, what kind? Also do you have any regrets buying them?
Thanks in Advance.

I won't say the dealers doesn't know much. Rather, I think it is usually the service advisors that have trouble understanding what the technicians actually said and then misinformed the customers with their own words. Afterall, most SA are just customer service, doesn't make a difference to them if they work in a BMW dealer or a Nokia service station. So, I think it is your SA that is the one that doesn't know much. I am generalizing here, there are some good Service Advisors out there.

Anyway, back to your question. Last year when I wanted to get style 166, I was told by my SA that it should physically fit all E60. BUT the only problem is the offset. You see, style 166 is specifically made for the M5 so the offset of the wheels is different then our normal E60 (he gave me the offset numbers but I don't remember). He explains to me that even if the tyre size is correct and doesnt rub, it doesn't mean that everything is alright. He goes on the explain to me that a slightly off offset will NOT cause serious problems to the suspension of the car under normal driving conditions. And most drivers will NOT notice the slighty changed handling dynamics. But in the long term, a wrong offset might lead to uneven tire wear and sometimes (but rarely) pre-mature suspension faults.

Anyway, slightly off offset always happen for many aftermaket wheels. If the offset is not way off, I don't think it is such a big deal. It is just that they are a dealer and they have to do everything by the book, that's why they won't install the wheel. I'd say go ahead with style 166 if you really like it. If the dealer won't install it, bring it to a good tyre shop.

Anyway, best of luck.

I have had the same problem at my dealership. If the offset isn't exactly the same they say it is not advisable. Well, I did it anyway, and it transforms the car into what I thought I was getting in the first place. This is the best value upgrade you can make in terms of ride, steering feel, and the car's appearance. I purchased from Crevier BMW in California.

They work perfectly fine. Lots of us have this set up, and we are having no issues.

Good luck.

The wheels work fine - but you can't use the same tire sizes as the M5. Check out Lomag's set-up ... I think the 285s in back look great.

I say go for 166s and if you sell it back to them you can reinstall the old one -we would not want to be out of specs on offsets . My dealership is just great - they love to see cars modified and I just think some dealers are too dumb or too conservative to push the limits of our cars.
