Default HPFP Failure - Parts Advice?

Broke down on the way home from work yesterday, car flashed a High Pressure Fuel Pump warning then I lost power. Managed to coast to the side of the road. I also have a pretty serious oil leak - probably associated with the HPFP.

Pelican Parts has a remanufactured OEM HPFP kit for about $1k - anyone have any other suggestions? I'm not interested in putting in a used part - I'm more interested in reliability. This will be the second HPFP in this car - it's at 220,000 km - the original was changed at about 50,000 km.

Getting a tow home. HPFP

ECS Tuning offers a new pump for US$790, so about CAD 995 - genuine BMW. OEM Bimmer Parts offers one made by "Magnetti Morelli" for US$649. Never heard of that brand, though.

Hmmm, with an oil leak, I hope there's no internal damage or anything. I remember watching a video by Vehicular DIY
when his tensioner (I think) on his HPFP and oil pump chain broke and it screwed up some things. This royally sucks though, you have put so much excellent maintenance into that car, I'm really sorry this happened to you. Fingers crossed here as I've never had any HPFP issues though when I bought my car in 2018 the HPFP was really shiny making me think it had recently been replaced.

@kd7iwp Looks like I'm good - no massive oil leak, just low oil level. Checked codes - confirmed high pressure on the high pressure fuel rail led to the engine shutting down - pressure control valve failure. This pump has 160,000km on it, so I'll change it and the fuel pressure senders. Got the HPFP out, ordering parts now. Need a walnut blast, so I'll do that while I'm waiting for parts.

@zoom750 Thanks for the tip - went with the OEM pump from ECS tuning for the parts.

Dang, I didn’t know these HPFPs were so expensive. Considering how often they seem to be replaced, though I guess in the US they were under recall warranty.

All back together and running fine. No codes.

New HPFP and LP fuel pressure sender

Back together and running

Did a walnut blast while I had the intake manifold off - it was due.

Who did the walnut blast? It looks amazing. I did a chemical clean and it looks nothing like that.

What's the little yellow filter in the first photo?

When I did the front diff service in 2018 with the engine out, I couldn't find a replacement breather cap (realoem part number / part didn't match my specific diff) so I added a breather tube and filter. Little extra insurance.
