How RPi Ram Air works

Hey guys,
There have been a lot of questions as to what and how the ram air induction kits work. I figured I would post a new thread so people can understand it better. Maybe a sticky?
Here is a diagram of how the airflow goes to the factory air ducting.
Here is a diagram of how the airflow is with the ram air.
These diagrams are shown on an M5 but the rest of the e60s work the same way with the exception that the ram air is on the driver side only. The tough part when designing the scoops was turbulance. The shape, angle, surface area, etc of the scoop would change how the iar was going into the air ducting. In some cases, we were able to cram more air but it was turbulant causing a decrease in hp or performance. With your RPi ram induction, you can be confident that several hours of dyno testing was conducted to ensure you are getting the performance your can wants.

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.
It's nice that you posted this up for the all the people that have been asking questions, however I still have to wonder, what is it about the term "ram air induction" that people don't understand? I thought that it was pretty self explanitory

ram air...i think it means that you are "ramming" the air into the intake box. It kind of works like a VERY VERY small supercharger...it "rams" in air into the intake to produce more hp...don't quote me on this because I am just giving my understanding. Im sure some of the other members can elaborate.

basically the air if force fed into the scoops creating a vacuum affect. this allows the air to travel into the air box at a higher rate of speed with minimal turbulence.
the factory air ducts are angled 90 degrees from where the air comes in contact with the duct. when the RPi scoops are added it changes the air flow to the optimal angle.
