I'm less then a week and a half away from buying an '06 525i and I'm looking for opinions. This guy at my work is telling me that BMW isn't that reliable, and that it breaks down a lot.

Any input?

My E60 is VERY reliable. I have 110 NOS and it still runs strong at 73,000 miles

I have had my E60 (2004) for a bit over two years and no major problems have occured. Actually, everything has been just fine.
Only concern I have had were the swirl flaps in the intake manifold, but you don't have to stress about them, since you're going for a petrol model. Mine is 530d.
And nowadays me neither have to stress about those devil's inventions, because they have been removed .

So go for a great car!

edit: 98830km gone now.

Overall they have been pretty solid.

BMW I think got a lot of there bad rep. from the past when they had service inspections intervals. Dealers would always find other things to fix weather they needed it now or not.

But one thing you do need to understand is a BMW,MB, Audi, Porsche, etc. cost alot more to repair when issues do arise then your typical Ford Taurus. Also they cars are very sensor and computer heavy. So there is even the slightest issue your going to know about it. Where as a Taurus you could drive for years with a small issue and never even know it. Good indy mech. can save you alot of money when your out of warranty.

The first model year of a new engine or body style have the most problems (1997, 2004, 2011?), other mine have been very reliable.

I only have 33xxx miles on my car but so far I have not had any problems with electronics. I did have to replace my transmission at about 29,000 because 6th gear was screwed up. And then I had a bunch of leaks including the vanos system. And one coolant leak becuase a hose was leaking. Nothing really major except for the tranny.

Just be sure to do a close check under the car to spot any leaks before they turn into big problems....

This shouldn't keep you from buying the car though.

I bought my car as an off lease CPO. I was shocked at all the things the dealer had to fix before I got. The car had 27k miles and I would have been pissed if I bought it new and all that stuff broke. But BMW does try to resolve issues with new software and better parts as they learn about problems. Since I have owned the car only a few minor things have gone wrong.

If we were comparing from new to now and Lexus is a 10 my E60 would be a 6

If we are comparing from my purchase date to now and Lexus is a 10 my E60 would be a 8

I can speak from experience just look at my signature. BMW vehicles are extraordinary cars when you get a good one. They have their problems but so do other cars. You have to remember the technology that goes into these vehicles as apposed to a $15,000 car. I myself will tell you that they are very reliable but it comes with a price. If it's not under warranty you will pay a hefty price for repairs unless you have a hook or are mechanically inclined.

I will always love BMW and you will to.

Rick.
